James Walter Spivey was born April 26, 1943 to Argus and Mary (Smith) Spivey in the Shewmaker Community near the Iron Furnace. James passed from this life peacefully at home on March 8, 2024 being 80 years and 10 months old.
James married the love of his life, Brenda Vaughn, on August 31, 1963 and shared 60 years together. Three children were born to this union, James P. Spivey (Joyce), Timothy W. Spivey (Lucinda) and Suzanne C. Dutton (Derik). James was also the doting Papaw to twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren whom he thanked God for each day. They were his greatest blessings. Also surviving is a sister Brenda Jenkins (Mitch) and his prayer warrior cousin Neen Smith.
James is preceded in death by his parents and sister Melba Bonnell and great granddaughter Olivia Hastie.
James was a devoted Christian attending Rosiclare General Baptist Church for almost 60 years. He worshiped God, the Father and His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. James worked as a coal miner at many local mines, Turner Coal Company, Sahara Coal, Peabody and Marissa Coal where he was an examiner for 28 years. While coal was the job, farming was his hobby. James loved hard work and helping his community. Many local residents have benefited from his generosity. Whether breaking gardens, snowplowing driveways, delivering food to food drives for the elderly and shut-ins, James was there to lend a hand. James especially enjoyed the local parades and playing Santa to deliver treat bags.
James loved to visit and talk to people. This made his position as host on the Shawnee Queen the perfect position. He enjoyed meeting people from all over the area.
Words on paper cannot sum up James’ life. He loved greatly and was loved greatly in return. While we are comforted knowing he was welcomed to Heaven in the arms of his Savior, his earthly presence will be missed.
